Halfway to Thanksgiving Giveaway

May 24, 2010

in Life in General

Can you believe it – in six months, we’ll be pigging out on sweet potatoes and getting ready for Black Friday. To celebrate our halfway point, I am giving away Zebra Crossing.  Adorned with flecks of pure white, this hand knit fuzzy fun-fetti scarf is an homage to Cruella De Vil and her limousine!

Zebra Crossing

On a more serious note, I recently learned that the zebra is the symbol for carcinoid cancer (a rare animal/a rare cancer) from my old friend, Karen, with whom I went to high school many, many years ago.  We reconnected recently on Facebook as we get ready for a big class reunion in Chicago.

When Karen was finally diagnosed with carcinoid cancer, she had spent 17 years trying to find out why she had persistent abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal disorders. Karen is a marvelous example of someone who is LIVING with carcinoid cancer.  She and her husband, Ken, have managed to take exciting trips around the world, enjoy ballroom dancing, outdoor excursions in nature and visiting friends and family when Karen is feeling well.

Karen is a fierce advocate, keeping in touch with other survivors on the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation’s online support group and increasing awareness through Facebook.  She also attends monthly local support group meetings in the Chicago area and keeps learning about the latest treatments and research during the annual conferences for patients and their families.

Carcinoid is a rare, usually slow-growing, deadly type of cancer that is hard to detect. It is frequently misdiagnosed for years and years.  Any one (or some or all) of the following symptoms might indicate carcinoid cancer: chronic diarrhea (or constipation), flushing, abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, low or high blood pressure, chronic bronchitis, wheezing, cardiac disease, weight loss.

There are specific blood tests that can be ordered to confirm carcinoid. Only specialists in carcinoid know how to detect and treat this cancer.  To learn more, go to The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation  or The Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network.  The Sea4Carcinoid website has a wonderful explanation of why carcinoid cancer patients identify with the zebra.

I am very proud of Karen and her determination and strength. Celebrate her and all the other carcinoid cancer survivors whenever you see a zebra!

Your scarf looks much lovelier (and softer) than Cruella ever was! Thanks for the information about carcinoid cancer too…and zebras.

Lois, you are truly one of the sweetest people around, and you really do what you can to spread the word about important issues and are really “there” for people. Thanks for all you do! I love the scarf–please put my name in the hat!
Smiles, Karen

Halfway to Thanksgiving, a giveaway AND a tribute to a friend with cancer including tons of info… this is one meaty blog post!
Happy, healing thoughts go out to your friend Karen, and anyone else living with carcinoid cancer. This post is the first time I have even HEARD of carcinoid cancer. Thank you for sharing this, Lois… who KNOWS who may read your blog and find out that they or a loved one may have it, too. You could be saving LIVES here. :)
As for your giveaway, I LOVE your zebra scarf, and if I have to choose a favorite in your shop, I have to go with this one,
http://www.etsy.com/listing/26641663/sale-hand-knit-lightweight-shawl-shrug . Today on Cape Cod, it’s too hot to think about your beautiful scarves, but this light weight shrug/shawl would be fabulous after the sun goes down. :)
Well, off to do some tweeting! :)

I am a carcinoid fighter who has been diagnosed for 9 yrs. We are grateful for people like you who help spread an awareness of our illness. It took10 yrs for diagnosis- I want others to be diagnosed earlier and easier! Thank you! Your scarves are lovely!!! Scarves are my favorite fashion accessory-they can warm you up when you get chilled, they can dress up even a casual outfit and most of all they are fun!
